Where the Claddagh Ring Comes From
The Claddagh ring originates from a small fishing village called An Cladach — The Claddagh — on the west bank of the Corrib river in Galway, Ireland. The village no longer exists as it once did, but the ring it gave the world is more popular than ever.
The most widely told story credits the design to Richard Joyce, a man from the Claddagh who was captured by pirates in the late 17th century and sold into slavery in North Africa. While enslaved, he worked under a Moorish goldsmith and learned the craft. When he was eventually freed and returned to Galway, he brought the ring design home with him.
Whether that story is entirely fact or partly folklore, the ring itself is very real — and very Irish.
What the Claddagh Ring Symbolises
Every element of the Claddagh design has a specific meaning:
The Heart — represents love
The Crown — represents loyalty
The Two Hands — represent friendship
Together, the three elements carry the traditional saying: "With my hands I give you my heart, and I crown it with my love."
It's a remarkably complete sentiment for something small enough to wear on a finger.

Heart pointing outward (away from you): You are single and your heart is open.
Heart pointing inward (toward you): You are in a relationship — your heart has been captured.
